If you have decided to go with asphalt stamping, you should learn what is available to you so you can make the right choice. There are template stamps available like rigid stamps, flex mat stamps, and textured stamps.

The Stamping Process

Before you learn the different types of stamps, you need to know how the stamping process works.  The contractor will first put a layer of a concrete epoxy blend over the surface that is being stamped. When the concrete blend is laid, they use a template stamp, lay it face down onto the concrete to transfer the design, and then removed after a few minutes. How long this is depends on the type of stamp being used.

They continue laying the stamps until they are finished designing the entire area. At this point, the contractor can apply the color. They must finish the job before the concrete starts to dry

Rigid Stamps

Rigid stamps are templates that are sturdy, and because of this are used by many contractors. After the stamped templates are laid, if you do not like the design, they can be removed, and moved to another position.

You can choose from different sizes. For example, if you want something decorative, you can choose a stamp that is in the shape of a flower, make a design of a compass in the middle of the area, circular, odd shapes, etc. If you want your driveway to look like cobble stone, you can do this with rigid stamps. As you can see, you can use just about any design that you like.

Rigid stamps work well on a traditional driveway, patio, around a pool, a walkway, etc.

Flex Mat Stamps

Flex mat stamp templates are not as rigid, and are typically used on walls, stairs, or corners of driveways and walls. These stamps cannot be removed once they are laid, so make sure you know where you want to put them. Like rigid stamps, they can be made with different colors and designs. Because they are often used on walls, you can create something that goes well with your flooring, or use them as a unique design in a kitchen, bathroom, etc.

Textured Stamps

Textured template stamps are typically used on vertical surfaces, such as a column or wall. They are also often used as an edging on slabs and stairs. They work well for these things because textured stamps are flexible, and they are easy to lay.

Textured stamps are available in a variety of designs. For example, you could put small squares and circles on the same stamp, or make the stamps look like a brick wall. The ideas of what you can choose are endless. Like all stamps, you will be able to choose from a variety of colors.

When all template stamps have been laid on the asphalt, most contractors will put a seal on them. This protects them from the elements if they are outside, from being scratched, cracking, etc. To learn more, contact a company like K-W Cornerstone Paving with any questions you have.
